PLANNING A RESIDENTIAL PROJECT

Before you choose an asbestos removal company

Look for a firm that explicitly handles residential asbestos work, then confirm it serves your address and accepts a job of your size. An office nearby does not establish service coverage. Contact companies directly to check availability and compare written scopes.

Asbestos does not always need removal. EPA advises leaving material alone when it is in good condition and will not be disturbed. If planned work could disturb suspect material, seek assessment by a trained, accredited asbestos professional; appearance alone cannot confirm asbestos. EPA homeowner guidance

Questions worth asking

EPA recommends using separate firms to assess the need for abatement and perform the work, helping avoid conflicts of interest. EPA hiring guidance

What affects an asbestos removal quote?

The material, quantity, condition and access can all affect the price. Crew and equipment setup, containment, disposal and any necessary testing also contribute. A small area can still involve substantial setup work. Cost factors explained by Michigan contractor BDS Environmental

To compare estimates, give each company the same inspection report when available and ask it to price the same materials, locations and quantities. A lower total may cover less work. Ask for these details in writing:

Ask which items apply to your project; this is not a list of universal requirements. Before work begins, EPA recommends a written contract covering the work plan, cleanup and applicable requirements. EPA contract guidance

What does “license record checked” mean?

It means the directory checked the company’s official MIOSHA record on the stated date. Reopen the state record before hiring. This check does not establish current availability, service coverage, insurance coverage or the quality of a particular job.

Does every asbestos job require the same license?

Michigan generally requires a contractor license for hired removal or encapsulation of friable asbestos. Limited exemptions cover specified licensed trades doing qualifying incidental work. A small job alone does not establish an exemption. Michigan licensing requirements

Who handles Michigan project notices?

Ask which notices apply to your project and who files them. MIOSHA and EGLE have separate responsibilities; a contractor-license check does not verify project notifications. Michigan asbestos programs
